Introduction

With the emergence of fast industrialization in the country, the demand for skilled workers increased manifolds and to cope with this increased demand and to provide maximum employment to the youth by training them in various technical trades, a scheme of setting up Industrial Training Institutes was launched by the Govt. of India, shortly after independence. In the furtherance of the above scheme.Baba Santa Singh Shaheed Govt.I.T.I. Samrala started functioning in 1963 and it has pride of being one of the oldest I.T.I.s of the State. It is situated near New Bus Stand on Chandigarh road,Samrala.The Institute campus spreads over an area of 18.83 acres and it has all the facilities, such as, well-equipped workshops, hostel, spacious playgrounds and beautifully laid out lawns.

Mission

The objective is to produce technicians and skilled manpower in different vocational trades as per requirement of industry and thereby enable them to get themselves employed in factories and workshops or start their own small employment units. Under this scheme,present intake capacity is 268. The period of training varies from one year to two years. The entry qualification to these courses is Matric or equivalent with or without Science/Maths depending upon the nature of a course/trade. Admission is made purely on merit by the Admission Committee, which is headed by the concerned SDM. However, weightage is also given for higher qualification at the time of admission. Reservation to different categories is provided as per instructions of Govt. of Punjab issued from time to time. The session starts in the month of August every year. However, admission process is started in the month of July throughout the State as per admission scheduled finalized by the Department. On completion of the training, the National Council of Vocation Trades conducts Final Trade Test in the month of July and the successful students are awarded National Trade Certificate. Private candidates can also appear in Final Trade Test provided they fulfill the requisite academic qualification and also have five years experience in the relevant trade in an organization covered under the Apprenticeship Act 1961
